For the Swoppet Infantry in Action, to be, as it were, strapped to their knapsacks. These knapsacks were produced in PVC plastic, and the equipment – the figures were randomly allotted either a spade or a pickaxe – was produced initially in some sort of polystyrene. Not only did this make them prone to snap, but there was also an unfortunate reaction between the PVC and the polystyrene resulting in the polystyrene sort of melting. The Replicants spade, like the later Britains version, is polythene, which doesn’t react with PVC.
